A hip to gable loft conversion is quite a large job, as the whole roof is re-structured to increase internal space, and alter the roofs ability to support new floors and beams.
A hipped roof is angled at the side and is usually found on older style detached builds, semi-detached homes or end of terrace, and in usual terms the roof should be replaced from a hip to a gable so that a suitably sized loft conversion can go ahead.
A hip to gable extension is not always possible, for instance where planning permission is not granted, so there are alternative options such as adding a dormer loft extension which faces the side.
